The race features multiple competitive classes sanctioned by the Trinidad and Tobago Powerboat Association (TTPBA), including a dedicated SPEC Class and a range of speed classes.
The SPEC Class is a one-design category, where all boats are identical—25ft locally manufactured Bowen hulls, each powered by a single 200HP Yamaha engine. This ensures that competition in this class is based purely on skill, strategy, and crew performance, as there are no variations in equipment. Notably, the SPEC Class is not subject to any speed restriction.
In contrast, the speed classes range from 60 mph up to the top-tier 130 mph class. Within these categories, boats may differ in size, hull design, and propulsion systems. However, each class has a strict maximum speed limit, which must not be exceeded under any circumstances.
Speed is monitored using onboard GPS units, and any boat that surpasses its class limit faces penalties or disqualification. The severity of the consequence depends on the specific race rules and the number of infractions recorded during the event.
B Class - 120 MPH
H Class (Cruiser/DDI) - 50 MPH
